How to check your police verification status in Bangalore?

So, you have applied for your passport in Bangalore, and waiting for it for ever.

The passport verification status at rpo Bangalore is the dreaded red flag, and the status says “we have not received your police verification” what do you?
Well, if you are online sauvy or a techie(like me), you search the net come up with the Hindu article Log in to check status of passport verification and get all elated! After all,  India is an emerging growing economy and Bangalore is the epicenter of it – so you can check passport police verification status online!
Well, you forget that India is great NOT because of its archaic, old bureaucracy but INSPITE of it.
Anyway, the bottom line is like so many other Govt initiatives, www.ksp.gov.in passport status is a failed, aborted effort.

So here is what you need to do :

Note: This information is correct of the date of writing(June 2010), but Govt procedures change without notice

First, the way police verification works is like this: The police verification form you submitted with your passport application is first sent to the Commissioner of police office. From there it is sent to the local police station. The local police does your verification and sends it back to the commissioner’s office. There another round of checking happens to see if you have any criminal antecedents, and final report it sent to the RPO office.

Steps to know Police Verification status from Commissioner of police:

1. Go to Commissioner of police office in Infantry Road BEFORE 1:00 pm on any working day. Carry with you a piece of paper that can Identify your passport application. This can be the xerox copy of your receipt. Submit that piece of paper to a person sitting on a table in front of the foreigner’s registration office.  (The table is a non-descript, unmarked one, if you have a problem locating it, just ask around)

2. Wait till 4:30pm/5 pm

3. Around 5pm one person will come out with a small scribble at the right hand side of the paper you submitted earlier. This will have the information you are looking for. It will have something written, like: “sent to HAL ps” and date.

(Note: Sometimes this scribbling can be ambiguous. Like it might said “Not Received”. Then it is not clear if the application not received from RPO office, or not received after being sent to local police station. Please make sure to ask for clarification)
